CocoRosie, Lemonade. From the 2010 Grey Oceans album (Sub Pop Records)
Coco: Bianca Leilani Casady
Rosie: Sierra Rose Casady
CocoRosie was formed in 2003 by Coco and Rosie, two sisters sharing a Cherokee blood. Their genera twists around the indie-rock and psychedelic folk. Their music is often associated to what is called “New Weird America”. The NWA is a sub genre of psychedelic and indie music, some sort of psych folk with a taste of free jazz, electronic and noise music, musique concrète and tropicália. The NWA best describes the music of the late 20th and early 21st century, well, today.
CocoRosie published La Maison de Mon Rêve, their first album, in 2004 through the independent record label Touch & Go. Initially the two sisters, who had been apart for over ten years, were meant to give the album simply to friends and acquaintances, but after Touch & Go heard their sounds in this home-made lo-fi album, it insisted for it to be published. Since then the two sisters never parted and published three more albums, Noah’s Ark in 2005, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn in 2007 and Grey Oceans in 2010.
A definitely unusual sound, voice and composition. Something I really like.
