What is the story behind “the” lamp?
What is the story behind one of the logos which we love so much?
It was 1986 and Steve Jobs purchased the Computer Graphics Division from George Lucas and established an independent company to be christened “Pixar.” At this time about 44 people were employed.
It was 1986 and Luxo Jr. was completed. The short film, John Lasseter’s directorial debut, was unveiled in August at SIGGRAPH and then screened for general audiences at Los Angeles-area theaters in November. Luxo Jr. was the first three-dimensional computer animated film to be nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar.
1986: Pixar and the lamp were born.
Luxo Jr. is the source of the small hopping desk lamp included in Pixar’s corporate logo. I didn’t know about it and find it pretty amazing! And the lamp itself, it does exist and it is not just a normal “desk lamp” or a “mommy look! the pixar lamp!!!!”, it is actually made by a Norwegian company called Luxo!
And btw, if you were just wondering, California doesn’t get cooler than this: a huge Pixar lamp at the Pixar Studios just there for you to take the awesomest picture in the world (like this random guy did hahahaha)!
And just because we are talking lamps here… and because we are all a bit crazy…. this IKEA commercial is hilarious:
But then, I really wouldn’t have the heart to throw away that lamp! I’m one of “thooooose” people… : D
